広東省佛山市は清初期から粤劇発生の地でした。粤劇は広東地方の音楽と武術を取り入れ、当時、粤劇団は佛山のみならず、広東省各地に移動して活動していました。俳優やその他の劇団員と華麗な服装、器具と数多い楽器などで構成される用具を移動するのに広東省珠江を「紅船」で往復していました。そのため、劇団員はよく「紅船子弟」とも呼ばれていました。
琼花会館は清中期～末期にかけて機能していた粤劇の最初の会館でした。当館の著名俳優に李文茂がいて、その武術的才能と人格は広く知られていたようです。当時、中国最大民族である漢族は清政権を倒そうとして、李文茂は１８５４年に反清・天地会と意気投合して反清政権的戦に挑むことになりました。所属していたものが全員、紅船子弟の衣服を着ていた関係で、「紅布軍」と呼ばれた。当時、賛同して加戦していたものに詠春拳、蔡李佛のものなどがいて、ともに活動していたようです。なお、現存する詠春拳流派の殆どは琼花会館にルーツを遡ることができます。
Futsan City, Guangdong Province in the early Qing period was the birthplace of Cantonese Opera (Yuegik). Yuegik incorporates Cantonese music and martial arts, and at the time was not only active in Futsan, but moved from location to location within Guangdong Provice to perform. Troupes would move up and down the Pearl Delta in Guangdong on “Red Boats (Hungsyun)” to transport their actors and other troupe members, as well as the flamboyant costumes, props and large number of instruments etc. As a result, the troupe members were also often called “Red Boat Disciples (Hungsyun Jidai)”.
The Kengfa Wuikwoon functioned in the mid to late Qing period as the first Yuegik opera
headquarters. One of its famous actors, Li Man Mau, was renowned for his martial talent and ethics. The Han, China’s greatest ethnicity, strove to overthrow the Qing (Manchurian) administration at the time, and Li Man Mau colluded with the anti-Qing Tindeiwui (Heaven/Earth Society) in 1854 to engage in Qing. Since all the members wore red boat garb, they were known as the red clothed army. Practitioners of Wing Chun and Choy Lee Fut both participated at the time in collaboration. Virtually all Wing Chun lineages existing today can trace their roots back to the Kengfa Wuikwoon.
